DEFINITION
The journalism and the information sciences embrace all that is linked to the research techniques, the treatment and dissemination of the information by the means of newspapers, journals, radio, television, multimedia, press agencies and administrations and companies' information services.
The training in communication sciences aims to form competencies in various communication professions in order to respond to private and public companies' needs in the field of public relations, advertisement, marketing and institutional public communication.

ADMISSION
The access to the discipline is possible through :
a) The academic orientation system (all kinds of baccalaureate, but mainly baccalaureate Lettres).
b) The competitive reorientation examination is open to the applicants who have got their baccalaureate in the two years preceding the date of the examination that comprises the following tests:

  • Written test in general culture.

  • Translation written test.
  • A test on the topics relating to both national and international events.

c)  The professional journalists may attend the Press and Information Sciences Institute if they succeed in the written and oral tests organized to this effect.

REQUIRED SKILLS
Rigorousness; besides, the student should possess a good general culture, a good knowledge of languages, a sharp sense of observation as well as a good physical conditions allowing him to work on the field.

LENGTH OF STUDIES
The studies last four years and are divided in two cycles:
First cycle : this common trunk lasts two years at the end of which a first cycle diploma (DEUPC) is delivered.
Second cycle : this cycle lasts two years at the end of which a Master's degree (Maîtrise) is delivered in one of the two following specialities :

        1 - Journalism and information sciences.
        2 - Communication sciences.

EXAM REQUIREMENTS

  • The attendance in the courses, practical and directed works as well as in the activities on the field is compulsory.

  • Concerning the half-yearly modules, the examinations are scheduled every six months.
  • Concerning the annual modules, the examinations take place at the end of the academic year.
  • A catching up session is organized immediately after the examinations at the end of the academic year. The student is submitted to the examination of the subjects and modules in which he obtained an average inferior to 10/20 only.
  • To succeed, the student should obtain, in each module, a grade average equal or superior to 10/20, and a general average equal or superior to 10/20, in accordance with the article number 18 of the decree  1993-2333, November 22th 1993.

The DEUPC is delivered to the student who succeeds in all the first cycle's modules. The" Maîtrise" is delivered to the student who succeeds in all the second cycle's modules and presents successfully a "Memoir" in the speciality.

FIELDS OF STUDY
First cycle :
At the IPSI, the training focuses on the languages (Arabic, French and English) as an indispensable instrument to carry on the journalist and the communicator professions. The training aims also to grant the student a general culture in the juridical, economical, human and social fields, in addition to some specialized notions in information and communication.
Second cycle
:
The student has the possibility to choose one of the two following options :

  • Journalism and information sciences

  • Communication sciences.

In this cycle, the training focuses on the chosen speciality and on the teaching of the necessary technical competences to carry on the would-be profession. Training periods on the field are also scheduled in this cycle.

PROFESSIONAL PROSPECTS
The graduates in information sciences can, among others, carry on the following functions: reporter, editorialist, art or literature critic, sports journalist. He can make a speciality in domestic or foreign politics.
He can become foreign correspondent or sub-editor. The speciality fields are the written press, radio, television, press agencies, companies' publications... Some graduates carry on the function of press attaché.
The graduates in communication sciences can work in the following fields: the communication within private and public companies, public relations, marketing and advertisement.

ACQUIRED COMPETENCIES

  • Easy writing in at least one of the three taught languages.

  • Mastering of the techniques through which the information is obtained.
  • Capabilities to treat ideas and informations so as to present them clearly and briefly.
  • General culture and knowledge of the tunisian society.
