The health sector is in  full expansion. The working staff has doubled during the last decade. The studies leading to it are of two kinds :

1) The "long" tracks concern the medicine, the dental medicine and pharmacy; the basic studies last five years for the pharmacy, six years for the dental medicine and seven years for the medicine. For they who are interested, there are possibilities of specialized studies to which one can accede through competitive examination (résidanat). The specialization's duration : four years.

2) The "medium" tracks concern the health sciences and health techniques with 11 specialized sections; the studies last three years.

Once the corresponding diploma obtained, the health professions can be practiced :

  • In the public sector, mainly in hospitals, health centers, administrative services , regional and central control services linked to the Ministry of Public Health, but also the health services of the Ministries of Defense, Interior, Youth and Childhood, Social Affairs (labor medicine) and Transportation (aeronautic medicine).  It has to be said that the teachers in the Faculties and technicians' schools, where the health sciences are taught, are under the supervision of the Ministries of Public Health and Higher Education.
  • In institutions such as diagnosis and treatment centers and prevention and control services of the illness insurance funds, or the public companies active in the energy and transportation sectors…
  • In clinics and private consulting-rooms.
  • In labor medicine structures .

The practice of the health professions is ruled by legislations, codes and deontology that regulate the relations between the professional staff, their would-be employers (including the State) and the public, notably the patients and their families.

The candidate who chooses to follow a career in the health sector should :

  • be prepared to a compelling studies with heavy timetable based on theoretical teachings and practical trainings; It's a matter of studying basic and dense programs in the fields of human, social, biological and clinic sciences with a continuous control of the knowledge;
  • be highly gifted with moral qualities: the health personnel's mission is to take care of persons made weak and dependent by the illness and to whom they should listen attentively in order to take quickly the right decision. They should take into account the conditions of the patients so that the exchanges can take place in a climate of mutual comprehension and confidence.

Besides, once established in the active life, the health personnel should be aware of the necessity of updating his competencies. Indeed, a large part of the knowledge acquired is soon out-of-date because of the rapid progress of sciences and techniques. Last, the health professions are complementary : the aptitude to work in team is a recommended quality.
